Did you know the Memorial Art Gallery sits on what was once the Prince Street Campus of the University of Rochester? Guided by Mark Fisher, this special outdoor DeTOUR explores the rich architectural history of the MAG grounds and buildings.
We’ll identify the former university structures and see how they were adapted and expanded over time to create the Memorial Art Gallery as we know it today. Along the way, you’ll learn how to “read” architecture—spotting design clues that reveal different eras of construction and understanding how materials and styles were used to create a unified building.
We’ll explore key architectural styles such as Gothic Revival, Neo-Classical, and Modern, and highlight how the thoughtfully designed landscaping enhances and complements the buildings. By the end of the tour, you’ll see the MAG and its grounds in a new light – as a beautifully integrated environment shaped by history, design, and purpose.
To submit a request for ASL interpretation, please email [email protected] at least two weeks before the tour.
