Traffic Control Box Art: You can be a judge

For Immediate Release. The Neighborhood of the Arts is seeking judges for artwork applications corresponding to two traffic control boxes and two utility boxes located along University Ave. Judging is on a volunteer basis and will take place at the end of January. Judging should be completed in one or two sessions lasting approximately 1 hour. To be eligible for the first round of judging, interested parties must either be residents of the Neighborhood of the Arts or work in the neighborhood. Reply requested by Jan. 16 to JanetCollinge@aol.com.

The two traffic control boxes are located at:

1) Gleason Parking Lot and 2) Culver Rd. by HSBC.

The two utility boxes (owned by Time Warner) are located at:

1) 1033 University Avenue and 2) Granger Street.

A fresh start to 2012

Happy New Year! NOTABA meets next on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 (that’s the second Tuesday, not the first), 9:30 a.m. at Dark Horse Coffee in the Village Gate.

Meetings are open to everyone (not just members). Come to hear how other business owners are faring, find out what’s happening in the neighborhood, and learn what is in the works.

This month we are bound to get progress updates on: our request for proposals to paint traffic control boxes along University Avenue, ideas for a brighter night life NOTA, our 2012 NOTA Fest, and of course the city’s "ArtWalk" extension (no relation to the orginal ArtWalk).

NOTA bids a fond farewell AND wishes a fresh new start to the Bop Shop and its owner Tom Kohn, curator of the rare, edgy and creative in the world of music. Thank you for 29 years of great bands, plus a seemingly bottomless well of recordings and musical knowledge! The store moves to Monroe Avenue in Brighton. Stay tuned, though, for possible future concerts at Physikos and elsewhere in NOTA.

Welcome to the Neighborhood of the Arts Business Association

NOTABA is a collective voice for the diverse businesses of Rochester’s Neighborhood of the Arts. Our purpose is to help NOTA grow into a vibrant commercial arts district, distinguished by the neighborhood’s unique character. NOTABA brings business owners together to talk, learn, and collaborate, and it provides a critical link to the resources and offices of the City of Rochester.

Meetings occur on the first Tuesday of the month at 9:30 am at Dark Horse Coffee in the Village Gate, unless otherwise noted. Our meetings are open to members and non-members.

The Neighborhood of the Arts is having a party!

NOTA Fest 2011 Get The Word Out! honors Writers & Books 30^th Anniversary with activities at locations in Rochester’s historic Neighborhood of the Arts. From Friday 9/23 through Sunday 9/25, the area’s diverse businesses will be getting their messages across in all kinds of ways with discounts and free/low-cost activities for all ages, including exhibits, open houses, performances, workshops, and more. For Rochesterians, it’s a chance to get to know this lively commercial arts district and maybe get out some words of their own, whether in discussion, graffiti or comedy improv.

Here are the highlights as of last time we checked – more events are popping up as the date approaches:

Friday, 9/23, The Gallery at the Arts & Cultural Council, 277 N. Goodman St. The Arena Art Group’s 60th Annual Show, Momentum, will be on exhibit. Live music with Sound Exchange, 12-1 pm.

Friday, 9/23, starting at 7:30 pm, Joe Bean Coffee Roasters, 1344 University Avenue, is incredibly pleased to announce host Rochester’s first Latte Art Throwdown at their coffee bar and roastery. For those not familiar with a throwdown, it is a friendly competition where local baristas skillfully prepare lattes for a panel of coffee professional judges while being cheered on by friends and other coffee enthusiasts.
